We do not physically see God, so, we cannot know which Church to belong to; but we can know which teaching to follow and which leader to listen to, such that we can know which way to follow; but this cannot be done without research, study and experience on our part. If we are told to have faith with never obtaining physical results of that faith, we need to be smart enough to call B.S. If we are told to live lives that harm us financially, physically, emotionally, mentally, etc., we need to be smart enough to call B.S. If we are told to hate, discriminate, and commit crimes against others, we need to be smart enough to call B.S. If we are told to be tolerant and accepting of criminally sinful behavior, we need to be smart enough to call B.S. If we are told to be compliant and complicit with corrupt and abusive leadership of any kind; Religious, Governmental, Familial, or in our jobs or daily lives with others, we need to be smart enough to call B.S. Freedom of Religion is not a pass to commit crime and deny other Constitutional Rights and Freedoms.
As a born and raised Mormon, I have come to learn, after researching and investigating my religion, that it is false and “fallen”. I still recognize that I have Priesthood power, for I have literally healed others. I receive revelation and inspiration that when physically reproduced turn out to be good, true and correct. Thus, I have knowledge from physical evidence that there is truth to religious claims, but not all religious claims and definitely not all religions. All religions and their claims cannot all be correct; all but one, if at all, can be correct. It is therefore our responsibility to ensure we are not being led astray or brainwashed and when we learn that we are, we need the courage to stand up and leave, even in the face of abuse by those religious members we were a part of who refuse to exercise the courage you showed and demonstrated.
