Another of the doctrinal changes of the LDS Church is that ALL of the Prophets receive revelation and commandments for the Church. We are not only told to "sustain" them, but we are to be obedient to and follow all of them. Joseph Smith's revelation and commandment is drastically different:
2 For behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye have received a commandment for a law unto my church, through him whom I have appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations from my hand.
3 And this ye shall know assuredly—that there is none other appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations until he be taken, if he abide in me.
4 But verily, verily, I say unto you, that none else shall be appointed unto this gift except it be through him; for if it be taken from him he shall not have power except to appoint another in his stead.
5 And this shall be a law unto you, that ye receive not the teachings of any that shall come before you as revelations or commandments;
6 And this I give unto you that you may not be deceived, that you may know they are not of me.
- D&C 43:2-6
As a Church Service Missionary for the then Curriculum Department, we were strongly counseled over and over, "Only quote and reference the scriptures and the words of the Presidents of the Church!" But refer to the Church manuals for Sunday School, CES, and Priesthood and Relief Society. Very little is quoting a President, and the Teachings lessons are of a higher level of violation. With the Teachings lessons you have to search the quotes to see if it is a quote from a Conference talk. How in the world did they ever come up with a book for President Howard W. Hunter? Oh yeah, they used his talks when he WASN'T a President! Then the Teachings lessons were at least in the beginning reworded by the Service Missionaries, or shall we say, edited, or redacted. Compare for example the President Young manual, there is no lesson on the Adam-God doctrine, Blood Atonement, the polygyny of Jesus Christ and Adam, (the quote about Adam having more than Eve as a wife was edited out). I was even explicitly told that there is no way I was going to get Joseph Smith's translation of Genesis 1:1 from the Hebrew text in the footnotes until I "become the President of the Church". Currently our 4th Sunday lessons are selected from the Conference talks, and the curriculum for next year increases that to the 2nd and 3rd Sundays. More and more Church members are being directed away from the words of the Presidents of the Church. We aren't even getting a Teachings lesson book for President Monson.
Elder James E. Faust set the example of supporting the President and declaring their words and the words of scripture in his 1996 talk, "The Prophetic Voice", which I'll provide here if you don't want to go to lds.org:
Now with General Conference approaching, we have no President of the Church. That means that the Church is not being lead by authoritative revelation and commandment. When Elder Paul H. Dunn was exposed as a liar and a false witness, the President of the Church created the "emeritus" status. We need that for the President of the Church, but we need a President of the Church to establish it. As a result President Monson remains bed ridden, unable to perform his duties, because of his age. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were young when they were Presidents, now the pattern has been set for old men to run the Church and now we see the big flaw and complications associated with it. The First Presidency's Counselors or the Quorum of the 12 need to unite and make the change to provide the Church with a President. This year of all years we need a President of the Church. On 23 September 2017, the President of the Church, in order to fulfill the Revelation of John, needs to present to the Church for their sustaining vote, the Man Child, and yet no one even knows about the Man Child to begin with.
2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
- Revelation 12:1-2, 5
1 And there appeared a great sign in heaven, in the likeness of things on the earth; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.
2 And the woman being with child, cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
3 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up unto God and his throne.
- JST Revelation 12:1-3
Christians know about the sign and the date, they just don't know the interpretation or fulfillment event. But it will come and go if nothing is done. Again, I will tell who the Man Child is on or the day after the 23rd, but I'll give you a hint, he's not the President of the Church, so it will not be Pres. Monson or President Nelson, for the President of the Church must call him and give him the keys to the Church and the Kingdom. Could you imagine the Book of Mormon if Nephi didn't follow his inspiration to write the Small Plates? (See D&C 3 and I think 8) Such will be the situation if the Brethren don't appoint a new President and one who knows about the Man Child.
